A saree house on Ring Road does not buy packaging the way a boutique in another city does. It buys in season, against a despatch calendar that is set by festivals and wedding dates across the country, and it usually needs several sizes arriving together rather than one box in bulk. The supplier question in Surat is less "who makes a good box" and more "who can match my folds, keep up with my season and get the stock to my godown with the right paperwork".

This guide is written for that buyer: wholesalers, manufacturers and retailers in Surat's textile markets choosing a saree packaging supplier. What makes a good saree box, and how to judge a manufacturer in general, is covered in the plastic saree box manufacturer guide. This one is about the local and logistics side.

Key takeaways

  • Surat is the centre of India's synthetic saree trade, so packaging demand here is high-volume, multi-size and seasonal.
  • Match boxes to your own folded sarees with a physical sample before you order, not to a trade size name.
  • Order packaging ahead of your own peak. Surat's textile demand builds from Raksha Bandhan through Navratri and Diwali into the November wedding dates.
  • Decide branding at the first conversation, because printed boxes follow a different schedule from plain stock.
  • Goods moving from Dadra into Gujarat are an inter-State supply under GST, so expect an IGST invoice and, above the notified value, an e-way bill.

Why Surat buys saree packaging differently

Surat is where much of India's synthetic saree production is woven, processed and sold. A cluster profile by the Textiles Committee of the Ministry of Textiles describes the city as contributing about 30% of India's synthetic fibre output and 40% of its man-made fabric production, lists more than 40 major varieties of polyester sarees and dress material, and counts 142 textile markets for finished goods. The same profile notes that nearby Silvassa and Daman were growing to meet Surat's texturised yarn requirement, which is a reminder that the textile economy of south Gujarat and the Dadra belt has long been one supply chain.

The profile dates from the mid-2000s and the cluster has grown since, so read these as an indication of Surat's weight in synthetics rather than a current measurement.

For a packaging buyer, three things follow from that scale.

Volume comes in waves. A trader who despatches to retailers across the country packs most of the year's stock in a few busy months.

The size mix is wide. Georgette, chiffon, satin, crepe and jacquard sarees do not fold to the same bulk, and a heavily embroidered piece wants more depth than a plain printed one. One box size rarely serves a whole catalogue.

The box travels. A wholesaler's stock is packed, baled and handled again by the retailer, so a box has to survive stacking and handling as well as look right on a counter.

What "local" should mean in a saree packaging supplier

What a Surat buyer actually needs from a nearby supplier is short distances at the points where delays hurt: getting a sample in hand, sorting out a problem with a delivery, and getting stock to the godown when the season has already started.

Our works are in Dadra, near Silvassa, in the Union territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu. The district administration puts Silvassa about 140 km from Surat by road, close to the Mumbai–Delhi national highway, which makes it a same-day road trip rather than a long-haul consignment. We also keep a sales office in Surat, at 208, Vasudev Estate, Varachha Main Road, near Geetanjali, so a Surat buyer can start the conversation in the city.

Whoever you buy from, ask the same practical questions: where the parts are moulded, where they despatch from, and whether mixed sizes can travel as one consignment.

Start from your own folded saree

The single most useful step is a physical sample test. Fold two or three representative sarees the way they leave your counter, with the blouse piece and any tissue included, and try them in the candidate boxes. A box that closes only when you press the lid down will spring open in a bale.

Trade size names are approximate, and the measured millimetres are what belong on the purchase order. The method, and every size in the range, is in choosing a plastic saree box size. For a Surat wholesaler with a wide catalogue, the usual outcome is two or three footprints with a choice of depths, not one size for everything.

Take the tested sample back to your shop and keep it. When the bulk delivery arrives, put a lid from the new batch on that sample's base: it is the quickest check that the order matches what you approved.

Choosing a format for the way you sell

Three moulded formats cover almost every saree requirement, and the right one depends on where the saree goes after it leaves you.

How you sell Format to look at first Read more
Wholesale to retailers in other states Crystal box, sized to stack in cartons Crystal saree box
Counter sales and carry-out PP box with a moulded handle PET vs PP saree box
Online orders and gifting Crystal pouch with a zip Crystal saree pouch
Long storage in a humid godown Rigid plastic rather than board Plastic vs cardboard saree box

Many Surat businesses use more than one of these, which is another reason to buy from a supplier who can send mixed formats together.

Plan packaging around the season

Surat's textile trade has a clear calendar. In August 2026 the head of one of Surat's textile markets told the local paper Loktej that traders expected demand to rise with Raksha Bandhan, Navratri, Ganesh Utsav and Diwali, and to strengthen further as the wedding dates in November approached.

Packaging has to be ready before that demand reaches your packing table, not when it does. Work backwards from the date your first festive orders leave the godown:

  1. Sample and approve early. A new size or format needs a fold test and approval before the rush, not during it.
  2. Settle artwork next. Printed boxes follow the artwork approval, so any branding decision should be made well ahead of the festive peak.
  3. Place the bulk order with a buffer. Suppliers serving the saree trade see the same peak you do, so their order book fills in the same weeks.
  4. Plan the wedding season separately. Heavier wedding and bridal sarees often need a deeper box than festive stock, so check depth again rather than repeating the Diwali order.

Ask any supplier for their lead time on your specific parts and decoration, in writing, at the quote stage.

Branding on the box

For a Surat wholesaler, the box is often the only place the trade name travels with the saree to the retailer's shelf. Printing it on the box, rather than sticking a label on later, keeps it on the pack through handling.

Screen printing, dry offset printing and shrink sleeving are all done in-house at our works, and each suits different artwork. The choices, artwork limits and what to prepare are set out in the guide to custom printed plastic containers. The practical rule for a Surat buyer is to raise branding in the first conversation, alongside size and format, because it changes the schedule.

GST paperwork for goods moving from Dadra to Surat

A consignment from Dadra to Surat crosses from a Union territory into a State, and that has consequences for the paperwork you should expect. This is general information, not tax advice; check your own position with your accountant.

It is an inter-State supply. Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu is a single Union territory following the merger legislation of 2019. Under section 7 of the Integrated Goods and Services Tax Act, 2017, a supply of goods where the supplier and the place of supply are in a State and a Union territory is treated as inter-State, and section 5 of the same Act levies integrated tax on inter-State supplies. In practice, a Surat buyer should expect an invoice charging IGST rather than CGST and SGST, carrying the buyer's GSTIN so the input tax credit can be claimed.

An e-way bill travels with larger consignments. The GST Council introduced the e-way bill for inter-State movement of goods from 1 April 2018, and it is required where the consignment value exceeds the threshold set out in the GST Council's press note. The same note allows the consignor to authorise a transporter or courier to fill Part A on its behalf. For a buyer, the check is simple: the e-way bill number should match the invoice, and the vehicle should be carrying both.

Getting the paperwork right is part of the supplier's job. If a quote does not say which tax will be charged, or a supplier is vague about who generates the e-way bill, ask before the goods are loaded.

Consolidated despatch

A Surat order is often several parts at once: two sizes of crystal box, a PP box for the counter and a few cartons of pouches. Receiving those in separate trucks on separate days means more handling at the godown and more chances for one part to hold up a packing run.

Ask the supplier to despatch mixed parts as one consignment where quantities allow, with the carton pack stated for each part so you can plan godown space. When the delivery arrives, count cartons against the invoice, open one carton of each part, and do the lid-on-sample check before the stock goes into use.

A checklist for a Surat buyer

Ask Why it matters here
A physical sample of each candidate size Your folds, your fabrics, your blouse pieces
Measured outer size in millimetres Trade names are nominal; cartons and bales are not
Material by name, PET or PP It decides clarity and how the box behaves in a hot, humid godown
Written lead time for your parts and decoration Festive and wedding peaks leave no room for slippage
Decoration method and artwork limits Screen, dry offset and shrink sleeve are not interchangeable
Tax on the invoice and who generates the e-way bill A Dadra-to-Surat supply is inter-State
Whether mixed parts can ship together Fewer deliveries in the busiest weeks
Carton pack per part Godown space and receiving checks

Questions buyers ask

Is it better to buy saree boxes from a supplier inside Surat?

Not necessarily. What matters is how quickly you can get a sample, resolve a problem and receive stock. A works a same-day drive away, with a sales contact in the city, can serve a Surat buyer as well as a trader in the next market, provided the supplier moulds its own parts and can repeat them order after order.

How many box sizes should a Surat wholesaler stock?

Most settle on two or three footprints, with different depths for light and heavy pieces. Fold your best-selling sarees, measure them, and let those measurements decide. The size guide works through the method.

Will goods from Dadra be charged IGST?

A supply from a Union territory to a State is inter-State under the IGST Act, so integrated tax applies. Confirm the treatment for your own purchases with your accountant.

Can I get my trade name printed on the box for the festive season?

Yes, if it is planned early. Printing follows artwork approval, so bring the artwork to the first conversation. The options are explained in custom printed plastic containers.
