A crystal saree box is a rigid box moulded in clear PET, with a lid that closes on snap tabs. "Crystal" is a trade name for the clarity, not a different material: it is the same polymer used for clear bottles and sheet, moulded so that the saree inside is identifiable without opening anything.

This guide covers what the clarity is actually worth in a shop, the five sizes the box is made in, and how to match a depth to the kind of saree you sell.

Key takeaways

  • Clear PET is amorphous PET. Confusingly, it is the crystalline form of the polymer that turns opaque.
  • Five crystal box sizes are moulded here, from 291 × 197 mm up to 381 × 304.8 mm.
  • At 12 × 15 inches the footprint stays the same and only the depth changes: 38.1, 57.15 or 69.85 mm.
  • Depth should follow the saree: light cottons in the slimmest, bridal sets in the deepest.
  • Clear boxes reduce handling, because staff can identify a piece without opening the lid.

What makes a crystal box "crystal"

The clarity comes from how the polymer sets. Transparent PET is amorphous, while opaque PET is semi-crystalline, according to a review of the material in Environmental Chemistry Letters. So the trade term and the polymer science point in opposite directions, which is worth knowing when a supplier offers you "crystalline PET" and means something cloudier.

Resin grades are sold on this property. Reliance's Relpet G5801 sheet lists clarity and gloss among the reasons to choose it. What you should expect from a crystal box, then, is glass-clear walls, a glossy surface, and enough rigidity that the box does not flex when it is picked up by one end.

What the clarity is worth in a shop

Three things, in practice.

Identification without handling. Staff pulling stock from a shelf can read the border and the weave through the lid. Every time that avoids opening a box, it avoids a saree being unfolded and refolded — which matters, because the Canadian Conservation Institute notes that sharp creases along fold lines can fracture fibres that are under stress.

Presentation at handover. A clear box makes the piece itself the packaging. For gifting, wedding purchases and online orders that arrive at a customer's door, that is the difference between a parcel and a product.

Protection between sales. The lid keeps dust, dirt and handling off the fabric while it sits on a shelf.

One caution belongs beside those benefits. Light is not filtered by a clear box, and silk is sensitive to light — the same CCI guidance reports that reducing illumination from 5,000 lux to 50 lux prolongs colours by a factor of 100. Crystal boxes belong on shelves and in cupboards, not in a sunlit window display for weeks at a time.

The five crystal sizes

Part Trade size Measured outer size Depth
CRS-102 7.5 × 12 291 × 197 × 47 mm 47 mm
CRS-101 8 × 12 310 × 210 × 50 mm 50 mm
CRS-103 12 × 15 × 1.50 381 × 304.8 × 38.1 mm 38.1 mm
CRS-104 12 × 15 × 2.25 381 × 304.8 × 57.15 mm 57.15 mm
CRS-105 12 × 15 × 2.75 381 × 304.8 × 69.85 mm 69.85 mm

The three 12 × 15 parts share a footprint and differ only in height, which is the useful thing about them: they stack and shelve identically, so a shop can carry all three depths without rearranging anything.

Choosing the depth

Depth is decided by what the saree weighs and how much the fold springs back, not by the length of the piece. Our own product guidance for the 12 × 15 range runs like this:

Depth Holds
1.50 in / 38.1 mm One folded cotton, georgette or light synthetic saree, an unstitched length, or a blouse-piece set
2.25 in / 57.15 mm A regular folded silk, designer or party-wear saree, or a saree with its blouse piece
2.75 in / 69.85 mm Banarasi, Kanjivaram or heavily embroidered pieces, or a full bridal set with blouse piece and petticoat

One footprint, three depths. The slimmest stacks more per shelf; the deepest keeps zari work off the lid.

The slim depth earns its place in a different way from the deep one. At 38.1 mm more units fit per shelf and per carton, which suits wall displays and courier despatch. At 69.85 mm the point is clearance: a heavy border sitting against the underside of a lid is what crushes zari work over months of storage.

The 2.25 in depth is the one most saree shops keep as their default carry-out box, because it takes the majority of silk and party-wear stock without leaving the fold loose enough to shift in transit.

Crystal box or crystal pouch?

The same clear PET is also moulded as a pouch, where a fabric zip runs round the edge instead of a snap lid. A box is faster to open and close on a counter and stacks more predictably; a pouch reopens indefinitely without stressing a lid tab and closes more securely for storage at home. The full comparison is in the crystal saree pouch guide.

If you also stock PP boxes with handles, PET vs PP saree boxes sets the two materials against each other.

Questions buyers ask

Will a crystal box yellow over time?

Not in normal shop conditions. The more realistic concern with any clear box is what the light does to the contents rather than to the plastic, which is why storage away from direct sun is the standing advice for silk.

Can crystal boxes be printed?

Yes — screen printing, dry offset printing and shrink sleeving are all options, though each covers a different amount of the surface. Anything that covers the box also reduces the visibility you bought it for, so most retailers print a small mark rather than a full wrap.

How do I stop condensation inside the box?

Do not seal stock away for a whole damp season without checking it. The Smithsonian's Museum Conservation Institute notes that boxing fabric can create a microclimate damper inside the box than outside, so opening long-term storage occasionally and keeping the room dry does more than the choice of box does.

Ordering

Decide the footprint from your fold and the depth from your heaviest regular piece, and order a sample of each before committing to a run. You can see all five crystal boxes and the rest of the range, work through how to choose a size, or send us the requirement with the saree type and monthly quantity.
